Creating a sustainable campus and promoting environmental education

Students get a series of lessons in environmental and field science each year, paid for by the BFEF. The Learning Garden is also used by our teachers for outdoor teaching.
The Green Team invests in education in Franklin's sustainability efforts, including working with its younger students on a fun, hands-on approach to composting - with worms!
Green Team partnered with Franklin PTA to make Franklin a pilot school for food waste diversion and reusable lunch trays, thanks to a dishwasher donation from Hobart in 2018.
In 2016, a new two-story building was built near Justin St. with a 96 kW rooftop photovoltaic array, which covers approximately 30% of Franklin's energy needs!
The BFEF Green Team partners with a host of local organizations to support sustainability projects and environmental education programs throughout Los Angeles.

Clean air is crucial for learning. The BFEF maintains over 70 Rabbit Air, Blueair, and MedifyAir purifiers throughout the school to help reduce pollution and irritants in our classrooms.
