What is Vermicomposting?
Vermicomposting means creating compost for gardens with the help of WORMS!
Franklin's Green Team is always looking for earth-friendly ways to maintain our healthy gardens. If we can combine those with student education, even better!
Vermicomposting is the process of using worms, like earthworms, to assist in the decomposition of food waste and other compost materials.
With the help of Green Team leaders, Franklin's Kindergarteners learn a recipe for "compost stew" - the perfect balance of fruit and veggie scraps, torn paper, and moisture to keep our vermicompost worms happily eating and producing rich soil amendments (aka worm castings or - as the kids love to say - poop). Worm castings are shown to have fewer contaminants and more nutrients than the compost materials before they've been processed!
Vermicomposting is a fun, hands-on lesson that touches on biological cycles, ecoconsciousness, physical contact with soil, and healthy eating (our worms don't eat tater tots!). And the rich compost keeps our gardens healthy.
